Toyota kept its lead over Volkswagen and General Motors as the world’s top-selling automaker in the first nine months of the year, reporting record sales of 7.615 million vehicles on Monday, up nearly 3 percent from the previous year.

Volkswagen said this month that it had sold 7.4 million vehicles from January through September, barely edging out General Motors in sales. G.M. this month reported sales of 7.37 million cars and trucks worldwide.
