AB trust lost most of its benefit after Federal estate tax exemption became portable, i.e. deceased spouse's exemption is automatically transferred to surviving spouse.  

However, AB trust is still useful in states that have arcane inheritance and estate tax rules, such as in NJ where you live.   as the following chart shows, people in most states don't need to bother with this kind of trust.
