Your green card will be extended automatically for one year from the green card expiration date after you file I-90. The I-90 Receipt Notice will be your proof of the green card extension, so you can show your expired green card and the I-90 Receipt Notice (i.e. Form I-797 Notice) when you use your green card (e.g. travel abroad, new employment in US, etc.).
