You don't have to inform the INS of your divorce proceeding until it is finalized.

I assume that your hu*****and petitioned for your green card application. Very likely you will be asked to be interviewed by an immigration judge before your application gets approved. Your hu*****and must show up together with you in the interview. If your divorce is finalized at that time, or if your hu*****and refuses to cooperate, your green card application will be rejected on site. In other words, you may be out of status at that time. You'd better be prepared for such situation.
