You should ask your school ISO about process status change. Basically, you have two choice:
1. Change your status within US, which may take several months;
2. Apply for a physical visa stamp of new status in any US Consulate or Embassy and come back to US with new visa. This is a quick way, but may have risk of being rejected or asked for waiver for the previous J1.

Just a caution, you may need two waivers in future, which is impossible. Better get I-20 from your new school and change to F1.
