Can we go to Mexico for Visa

I am a F-1 student, my hun*****and is H1-B. And He just send out the mail for green card application. But my daughter is in China, I miss her so much. I want to go to Mexico this July to get my visa (to earn one entrance for coming back from china). But some people tell us we can't leave U.S. since we applied green card. Is that true. Could somebody give me an answer? Thanks a lot.
