Your relationship with your department, for example, a Teaching Assistantship, or Graduate Assistantship, has nothing to do with your F1 legal status. As far as SEVIS is concerned, you are in valid F1 status if you remain full time and your I20 is valid. For summer, as I said, F1s don't have to take class. So you are fine.
