If you go to an INS office and ask they will tell you that you can keep your F1, you just can't travel as a F1. But if you only trust the international student office (which are not staffed by lawyers), then I have nothing more to say.

I extended my I-20 while my 485 was pending and I have met with INS officers. I now have my GC.
