Can I came back without visa

I only have a old J-1 visa on my passport, but I have changed my visa status to H-1B and hold a valid New I-94 for H-1B, My university international officer told me that if i want to come back from landing in Canada, I need to apply for a new visa.
is it correct?
any additional information is appreciated.
P.S. i am going to be driving to and from canada.
