It is "reasonable" at least to my knowledge. I have a friend who was on the same boat like your LG. He ended up with a master degree but he got a JOB. To me a decent job is much better than a Ph.D degree. So, why don't you guys go ahead to try to find a job instead of wasting time in school?

Your LG's supervisor is the BOSS, he financially support his students so he has the right to terminate the "contract" as he wants. Personally I don't think you can get anything if you try to resolve this issue with the LG's school.

This is not the end of your world, it might be a new start point of your life.
