Ha, ha. Got answer for the same question yesterday from IRS.
3 years tax free is for 2001,2002 and 2003 in your case. You have to pay tax for whole 2004 as a resident, not only partial. But if you have kid(s) and your spouse doesn't work, you can get back more than you have paid.
