Yes, you will be asked to present AP both at the counter of airline and the customs when leaving China.

I just came back with my AP. Was requested for secondary checking since it was my first time using AP, but I was only asked for several simple questions (such as what's your SS#;what are your parents' names etc.), they didn't bother to check my other legal documents. It was easy to come back. No worry.
