Your sponsor should do all paperworks for you. It will take several weeks to several months to get J1 within US if you can wait, or you can get physical J1 visa in a third country like Mexico so that you can start J1 earlier.

There is no way you can get H1b unless your spouse has already got J1 waiver. But remember, you will need TWO J1 waiver in future if you want to stay in US, one from your spouse including you as J2, another one for your J1.
