Can you understand this?

I'm here in USA on H-1B. Boyfriend is an American. He wants me to file for my greencard through employment instead of through marriage, citing "he doesn't want to be used, he loves me unconditionally, hopes that I love him unconditionally as well". I am really mad at him for not sponsoring my greencard, am I wrong? Should I be that independent to do everything by myself?
