At Surrey port, the US and Canadian gates are not next to each other. There are about 50 yards apart. However, US and Canadian territories are separated by metal nets. Before you enter Canada, you are in US. I never passed the border at that gate. I don't really know if you can make a U-turn right before the Canadian customs. Ask a local people before you go to Canadian customs.
