You need to get the I-140 approved to keep the priority date for future new I-140. You can use the left 6-year H-1B time for future H-b renewal. If you have the approved I-140, you can extend your H-1B beyond the 6-year limit. But if your I-140 is approved less than 180 days and the employer withdraw the approved I-140, then you cannot use it for extension of H-1B beyond the 6-year limit.
