When you enter US by land, you must have a GC, visa or document to show your citizenship (US or Canadian) or valid I-94. If this is your first time to pass the border, you may need to get off your car and enter the immigration room and may get your passport stamped. Without AP to leave US, your I-485 is considered abandoned even though you may come back to US.
