If he overstays for > 180 days or one year, he will be subjected to 3- or 10- year bar. That means he will be banned to reenter US  for 3 or 10 years if he leaves US. He also cannot get the green card within US unless his wife becomes a US citizen.

So, overstay has very serious consequences.
