I happened to ask the same question to my immigration attorney yesterday. Here is the response I got. Hope it helps.

- The fact that we are transferring his H-1B has no impact on his ability to re-enter the U.S, so long as he has a valid visa stamp in his passport. It might be advisable for him to have an approval notice for the new employer before he leaves so he can have his visa re-validated at the same time.
