technically she is out of status, because it's the non-immigrant's responsibility not to stay past the authorzied date(as shown on I-94)

Any normal way to extend status or re-entering with visa stamp can be tried but no solution can be guaranteed now. It will be up to lawyer's arguement and officer's mercy or overlook.
