And normally, 120 days is not too long for regular H1. Usually, it need 4 months to 6 months to get it. If you want to get it quickly, you need to apply premium process, it can be approved within 15 days.

Another thing, you don't need to worry about your status. If it is a new H1 visa, you cannot work after your current status expired but your pending status is still fine for staying in USA. If it is extension, you still can work unless this H1 application is rejected.
