What is the impact of the H1B approval without I-94 card?

If I received the H1B approval without the I-94, Could I still work for the new employer for 1-2 months, then take a vacation to go back China and reentry US getting the new I-94? Or I have to stop working as long as I get the H1B without I-94? 

Can I go to Canada or Mexico and reentry US to get the new I-94, or I have to go back China?
