问热情的8老师: 返乡证 to come back to USA

All my family members are Canadian citizens and also US permanent residents (currently living in USA).

My son will be studying in a Canadian university full-time for at least 4 years.  Does he need to apply for 返乡证 to come back to USA - He will come back to USA during holidays?  If so, does that mean that he will need to apply 2 times since it is valid fo 2 years each time?
