-Yes, you can get the TN visa status to enter US and work with TN status.The only restriction applicable to TNs involves I-129 change of status petitions. An individual subject to the J-1 two year home residency requirement cannot file an I-129 petition requesting a change of status from J-1 to TN visa status within US. Such individuals must depart the U.S. and obtain a TN at the border or pre-flight inspection office. This is due to the rule that individuals subject to the two year residency requirement generally cannot request a change of status by filing a petition with USCIS.
However, you still need to get the J1 waiver if you want to apply for the green card in the future.
