Passport Renew

Dear XDJM,
My Chinese passport will be expired on June 14, 2005. I plan to visit China from December 10, 2004 to December 20, 2004. I was told that when I return I have to show the customs officer my passport which will be valid for more than 6 months. Since so, It seems I have to renew my passport. Is it true?

If I renew my passport before I leave US, I am afraid the Chinese consulate won't accept my application, because on their website, it says passport needs to be renewed WITHIN 6 months before the expiration date. I may not be able to renew my passport after December 14, 2004. Such a headache! Does anyone have such experience to share? Thanks a lot.
