what's a A#? Do i have A#?

I know A# is Alien Registration Number,
Do i have A# if my status is H1B?

someone told me that:"The 485 interviewer will usually alter the beneficiary's passport to reflect the new A# that becomes the beneficiary's new identification number." Dose it mean that's the only way to get A#?

please give me a clue.
