F-1 student applied I485 issues: urgent!

Hello,

I applied I485 on Sep 13, 2011 and my I-20 expires on Aug 2012. I heard that once one applied I485, the F1 becomes invalid.

Also I worked as Teaching assistant from Sep 13, 2011 and will work as TA in 2012. Does that mean I worked illegally from Sep 13, 2011?

Please clarify this problem.
