there is not appeal available for a denied I-485 case. Although they can not appeal for the I-485 denial, your friend can file I-485 Motion to reopen/reconsideration (MTR) after their I-485 is denied if they think USCIS decision was not fair. I-485 MTR has the same function as appeal.
