if you are in F1 grace period when the h1 petition is fing, you may ask your old school to issue a I-120 to you to extend your F1 using Cap-Gap rule by presenting a copy (PDF or paper) of your timely filed H-1B petition and a FedEx, UPS, or USPS Express/certified mail receipt, not have to wait for the H1 petition filing receipt.
