You need to submit the federal tax return for a 485 application. The immigration officer can know your sources of income from your W-2, if s/he is careful enough.

The bottom line is whether there is illegal employment in your case. How to file the tax is not a concern.

If you are married, joint tax return is important evidence of true marriage.
