Will anyone who has a criminal record be denied in I-485 application even if he confessed in the form?

Who knows how FBI does the criminal check? In I485, last five years of recidency and last residency overseas are required. Does if mean FBI is going to track down records overseas?

I aksed a lawyer, he said FBI didn't really track down anything overseas. while, should you have some idea pls let me know.
