I-539 change of status "current authorized stay"

The instructions to I-539 form indicate, you need to submit the application for extension for stay or change of status before your current authorized stay expires.  What does “current authorized stay” mean?  Does it include the grace period after your current status expires?  For example, if my J-1 status is going to expire on May 31. Is the deadline for submit change of status May 31, or June 30 (J-1 has 30- day grace period after your status expires.)   Thank you!
