You can print out the approval information online using your H4 applicaiton receipt number which can prove your legal status. If you extend your H4 in the future, just provide the H4 applicaiton receipt and the online approval information as the proof of your status. If you visit China, just provide the old I-94 card (e.g. your old H4 I-94) to the airlines even if the I-94 has expired. Then, you can use your spouse's H1 approval notice to apply for the H4 visa to come back.
