travel back to china with AP pending, need help!!!

I have a friend who works for a US company and he is in China now for spring festival. He went back to China on 1/22. Before he went back to China, he filed an I-131 in order to get a AP to go back to China. However, he did not get the AP before he left for China (his AP application is still pending now). He recently was notified by the immigration office to do fingerprinting for his I-485 application (he filed NIW in 2007, that I-140 was approved, and I-485 was pending). The appointment date for fingerprinting was 1/27 (yesterday).

Right now he is stuck in China and is very anxious about what to do.Any suggestions?
