有父来美探亲，因为母亲早亡，所以父亲逾期未归，现在护照过期了一个月，准备换新护照随儿子全家返回中国。

这种情况到中国大使馆去办理护照或者是旅行证，

-Try to renew the passport, and it can't, try to get the 旅行证 (旅行证 is perfect for someone whose situation is like your father's).

会不会遭拘留？遣返？

-Not at all. 逾期未归 has nothing to do with the Chinese Embassy/Consulate (it is not their business).
