I don't think it is acceptable by USCIS, whether or not you will get paid later, say when you have EAD handy, for the period of being volunteer.
On the other hand, it is ok for I-485 when unauthorized employment is less than 180 days in total, let alone it is difficult to be noticed in your situation.
