-The H4 will overwrite the h1, so the person needs to file the H4 change to H1 again or just go outside US to get the h1 visa. But if the h1 effective date is later than the H4 effective date (H4 effective date normally is the approval date), the person's status will be H1 after the h1 is effective. This is similar to your situation because your H1 was effective on Oct. 1 which overwrote the F1 though the F1 was approved later than the h1 approval. So, your status was H1 after Oct. 1 and you were fine to work.
