After you renew your H1, you can find a job and do the H1 transfer. It is good for you to extend your H1 beyond the 6 year limit otherwise you will never come back to the H1 any more if you use up the 6 year H1 unless you stay ouside US for at least one year. Also, you can not change your status to F1, B1/B2 etc. due to your immigration intent. But your wife can change her h4 to any non-immigration status (your I-140 is not related to her).
