If you don't leave U.S. you

have to file the change of status request and wait in the U.S. for the result. You will not be able to study until the approval is issued, and this may take six months or longer. Therefore it's a better idea to leave U.S. and apply for F1 in home country and re-enter U.S. with F1 visa. Your intl student adviser should be able to assist you in filing the change of status request.
