I do not think it is true that the processing is suspended until one is back.

Actually there are instances in which 485 is approved while the applicant is travelling on advance parole. In that case, the applicant cannot reenter US on advance parole. Instead, he/she will use the 485 approval notice to reenter US, and the border agent will issue a parole with deferred inspection. He/she then can go to the local office and have the deferred inspection completed and get passport stamped.

When my laywer goes over the things to watch out for when my wife was issued the AP, she never mentioned anything about case being suspended while my wife is out of country. Not in any USCIS procedure, either.
