Please help! H-1B renewal got audited

My HR just told me that my H-1B renewal got audited, and I was asked to hand in more documents (paycheck, tax form and W2). This is my first H1B renewal, no green card has been filed for me. My HR told me this is "because USCIS to make sure that the company is compensating you correctly
based on what was stated on your H1 application & not
working illegally".

May I know why it happens? How long can I expect to hear from USCIS? What could be the worst situation for me? If it is compensation related, does it mean my salary should be adjusted?
