You can file your H1 extension in advance 6 months before it expires. After you get the H1 petition receipt, you wife can file her H4 extension for another 3 years. Or your wife just files her H4 extension to January now, and then file the H4 extension again in Jan.2010 or go to China to get an H4 visa to come back after Jan. 2010.

现在可以拿H1B直接去机场海关申请改I94吗？
