I just came back on Monday through the Blaine/Surrey crossing in Washington state. Neither the Canadian nor the US border agent looked at my passport. Going into Canada is less of a problem. Coming back could be hard to say. The US border tends to be a lot tougher based on my previous experiences. I still think you should get your passport renewed before you go. But if you are a risk acceptant person, there is a chance that you will be ok.
