every state has a department in charge of criminal record, but some will only deliver state criminal record, while some will provide both state and federal criminal records. Local court house is not the one you should go to, but search the website for your state criminal record keeper. In addition, there are two types of criminal record, closed and open record. You will need finger print search or advanced search to get all your records back. Only state record will not clear your background.
