Sorry to hear that your story.

It is common practice in Canada that interviewers do not pay interview related cost.

No phone screen before asking you to drive 5 hours to do the interview is un-heard of!

I worked a few years back in Toronto, too. Except they don't cover interview costs and lower salary, other things are the same as US.
