Just got GC approval, please help with passport!

passport had been taken by Chinese consulate in NY since I tried to change into a new private passport last year. I know that based on my situation, the Chinese Consulate wouldnt so easily give it to me, it is very critical. Right now I dont have a passport with me, may I go home only with GC in China? Otherwise, what should I do next? Thanks in advance for any input!
