His former boss / colleagues can comment on his previous work. The letter should clearly and strongly shows his extraordinary performance (EB1) in the field and great national interest of his work (EB2 NIW). Although previous and current work is different, the key point should be the same: extraordinary ability and national interest in the respective field.
