Usually, if J1 didn't waive, you cannot change any visa in USA. Did you change your F1 in other country?

I know some people also did it. They can change to H1 also. But when you want to apply for the Green card, you will have troubles.

Also, it is hard for you to waive your J1 visa also. Chinese embassy may reject it since it is too long times ago.
