How to keep legal satus to finish HS after parent laid off?

My friend has Canadian citizenship but working under H1 visa in CA. He just got laid off and has to leave the company in 1-2 wks. I heard that you can legally stay in US for 2 months looking for job after being laied off under H1. Can anyone confirm this?

Also, my friend's son is in grade 12 and going to graduate from High school in CA in June. How to keep his legal staus to finish his study?

Any help and info would be highly appreciated!!!
