Your friend must got lucky if he actually filed I485 in F-1 status without I140 approved first. I485 does not based on NIW. I140 could be. It safer for people in F-1 status to file I140 NIW first, then if approved, file I485. I140 is petition for perminent resident, I485 is adjust of status. I140 does not involve change of status, while I485 does.
